As the holiday season ramps up, it’s time to take a break, sit next to the fire and listen to holiday music. But when is the appropriate time to start listening to holiday music?
With many people starting the holiday season early and some later, the people we surveyed all agreed with each other that you should start listening to holiday music after Thanksgiving.
Our survey is aligned with a national survey from Stylist where they say “64% of people insist that Christmas music should never be played before Dec. 1.”
Avery Emmerich, an NKU student, believes that you should start listening to holiday music on Dec. 1.
“You have three weeks to get into the holiday mood while also not spoiling it by listening to it early,” Emmerich said.
Though not a huge Christmas music fan, Emmerich enjoys classic holiday songs on the radio. Her favorite song is “Last Christmas” by WHAM!
Holiday music makes Emmerich feel nostalgic.
“When I was little, my grandma would put on Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett during Christmas time,” Emmerich said.
Carter Dehyle, a University of Cincinnati student, also believes Dec. 1 is the appropriate time to start listening to Christmas music.
“It’s the start of the season…I don’t want to hear Christmas music in October or November,” Dehyle said.
Dehyle listens to Christmas music on the radio where a lot of radio stations are playing holiday music.
“A lot of songs that I grew up listening to make me happy,” Dehyle said.
One song Dehyle likes is “Jingle Bell Rock.”
“That’s the one I heard the most as a kid,” Dehyle said.
Annaleigh Brogdon, an NKU student, also agrees that you should start listening to holiday music after Thanksgiving.
“Thanksgiving needs its time to shine,” Brogdon said.
Holiday music makes Brogdon excited for the season.
“It’s such a happy time and Christmas music really gets me into the season of giving and caring for each other,” Brogdon said
93.3 FM is Brogdon’s go-to radio station for the holiday season. They play her favorite holiday music. “My favorite is all of them,” Brogdon laughed. “No, I think my favorite is “Last Christmas” by WHAM! It’s a classic.”
Brogdon really gets into the Christmas music vibe.
“I sing along and dance, it’s a great time,” Brogdon said.
Chole Cecil, also an NKU student, believes that anytime after Thanksgiving is okay to start listening to holiday music
Cecil doesn’t seek out Christmas music.
“I usually just hear holiday music played somewhere, I don’t typically seek out to listen to it myself,” Cecil said.
Holiday music makes Cecil happy. She is currently on a study abroad trip in Japan and holiday music makes her even more merry now that she’s closer to coming back home from her trip.
“The Polar Express” soundtrack is Cecil’s favorite because it was a movie she really liked as a kid.
Whether or not you believe it is too early or too late to indulge in holiday music, people can agree that listening to holiday music brings out joy and warmth, making the season feel magical.
