Dean Dr. Kevin Kirby – College of Informatics

Dr. Kirby is a fan of both studying and the outdoors. He and his wife are both into kayaking in areas such as the Little Miami River in Ohio. Dr. Kirby also codes for fun in order to teach himself more about his craft and mess around with smaller projects that are just for fun. “The calm allows you to be a better dean,” he said. One activity Dr. Kirby also enjoys is reading and translating older texts that have been written in different languages. Currently, he’s reading a book with Latin text and German footnotes. Sometimes he’ll make it through only three or four lines in an hour. When asked about how he separates home and work, he said, “Work is everywhere and potentially all the time. That’s why it’s important to have moments to yourself.” He also said that around once a month, several of the deans will get together and have dinner with one another and implement their N.T.A.W. rule, the No Talk About Work rule. Dr. Kirby maintains that having a solid foundation of colleagues is essential in keeping a healthy level of stress in his line of work.
