Another season of the weekly Norse Nation Coaches Show tipped off at Dead Low Brewing on Tuesday night, with men’s basketball coach Darrin Horn joining yet again and the new women’s basketball coach Jeff Hans joining the set for the first time.
Many great questions were asked by hosts Jim Kelch, Matt Sexton and Rick Broering, but here are the questions and responses that we thought fans should know.
Coach Horn on the Norse’s matchup against the University Of Cincinnati on Nov. 19:
“This is the best team they’ve had since [Cincinnati Head Coach] Wes Miller has been there.”
Coach Horn on the impact of the Division II transfers Dan Gherezgher and Josh Dilling:
“Dan is the most talented Division II prospect we’ve ever had. He is really dynamic in transition and can score from all three levels. Josh has looked the most comfortable. He brings toughness and can make shots at a really high level.”
Coach Horn on the health of Keeyan Itejere and Sam Vinson:
“Both of those guys are back and fully healthy and look really good.”
Coach Horn on how free throws have been so big for the team:
“I think it’s huge. When you don’t shoot the ball well and take care of the ball better [it’s important].”
Coach Horn on the Norse’s preseason ranking of third in the Horizon League:
“I don’t pay much attention to it. We have two preseason all-league first team guys on our roster.”
Coach Horn on the depth of his Norse team this season:
“It gives us a chance to not play some guys who we’ve had to play 34 to 35 minutes as much, but also just kind of gives us that identity.”
The hosts were then joined by first-year women’s basketball Head Coach Jeff Hans and senior guard Macey Blevins, who hit the game winning shot on the road at Marshall on Sunday. Blevins would be followed by new transfer Halle Idowu, who had a career-high 29 points in that game versus Marshall.
Blevins on her game-winning shot:
“I don’t even think I realized what was going on when I got it [on the inbound]. I kept going over in my head that I can’t miss.”
Blevins on the new environment under a new head coach:
“It’s such a positive environment to come into everyday. We look forward to going to practice everyday and getting better.”
Idowu on her goal for the rest of the season:
“My main focus is to compete with my teammates. Coach made it a good point that we only compete against ourselves.”
Idowu on the feel of the team:
“ I just think everybody has great aura and is unique in their own way.”
