The NKU Volleyball team swept the Mastodons in a dominant conference home game Friday night.
The “Dig Pink Night” took place in support of the continuing fight to find a cure for breast cancer and saw both fans and players adorn pink for the cause.
The Norse took the early lead in the first set with a kill by graduate student Abby Kanakry and a service ace from Anna Burke. The Mastodons would regain some momentum halfway through the set, but key kills from freshman Ava Hoying placed the Norse in the lead. The Norse went on to win the first set 25-21.
The second set saw Purdue Fort Wayne take the early lead with successful blocks and kills. However, multiple missed serves from the Mastodons would help the Norse regain the lead halfway through the second set.
Unlike the Mastodons, NKU had an excellent serving performance with 13 serving aces over the course of the match.
Purdue Fort Wayne would manage to save two set points, but ultimately the Norse would win the second set 25-19.
The third set proved to be the most difficult for the Norse. The Mastodons led early on and reached a 18-15 lead. Following a timeout called by NKU head coach Liz Hart, the Norse were able to regain momentum. Big kills from Kanakry allowed the Norse to regain the lead and win the third and final set 25-22.
A standout performance came from freshman Hoying, who led the Norse with 11 kills and a 0.409 hitting percentage. Kanakry also achieved remarkable feats with eight kills, three blocks and an assist for the Norse.
The Norse are right back in conference action as they take on IUPUI in Regents Hall Saturday at 4 p.m.
