The Northern Kentucky baseball team rallied in the bottom of the eighth to beat the Miami Redhawks 5-1 at Bill Aker Baseball Complex. The Norse improve to 11-18 on the season while the Redhawks fall to 12-15.

After Miami of Ohio knotted the game 1-1 in the eighth inning when Ross Haffey’s double to left would drive in the tying run and put the Redhawks on the board. The Norse offense then ignited to score four runs in the bottom of the inning .

The Norse returned the action after a base hit from Ganns to left field led off the bottom of the eighth. Moffatt followed with a single in the right field gap along with Mercurio’s single to center field to load up the bases. A sacrifice fly from Quint Heady allowed Ganns to cross home and the Norse to take the lead once again. Tito Montgomery sealed the deal with his first triple of the year deep to left field, allowing runs three and four to score. Anthony Vagner’s line drive past the shortstop would send Montgomery home, topping off the inning for the Norse.

Tyler Miller  followed up his great performance against UK with an outstanding performance in this game. Miller earned his second  win of the season, only allowing one run on five hits and striking out six Redhawk batters

“We just kept moving forward, we just gotta keep winning.” Miller said.

Playing off three RedHawks errors, NKU managed to squeeze a run across in the first inning. Kyle Colletta started things off when he reached on one of those errors from first baseman Ross Haffey, followed by a walk for Spurlin. A single from Trey Ganns would load the bases, and Mike Moffatt would answer the call when he singled past the first baseman allowing Colletta to score and put the Norse up 1-0.

NKU earned their 26 double play of the season late in the fourth, after Miami’s Haffey found his way on base with a single past shortstop Dominic Mercurio. A hit from Chad Sedio to second baseman Colletta would set up a double play, from second to first, retiring Haffey and the inning.

The Norse will look to sweep the series when they play Miami at their home field in Oxford tomorrow evening. Matt Ianni is expected to make his third start of the season for the Norse. First pitch is scheduled for at 6pm.
