Junior political science major Henry Crawford will serve as editor-in-chief of The Northerner for the 2025-26 academic year.
Crawford began with The Northerner at the end of the spring 2024 semester. He quickly rose from assistant news editor to his current news editor position.
In this role, Crawford has covered crucial stories for the NKU audience and beyond, from his top-performing 2024 general election coverage to an in-depth feature on Sandra Bazzani, the recently-hired director of Latino Student initiatives.
The Louisville native took charge on covering the NKU Student Government Association’s latest election, serving as a moderator of the presidential debate and breaking the news of Collin Jarrell and Kyah Smith’s victory.
While Crawford comes from a long family line of journalists, he didn’t discover his passion for reporting until his sophomore year when he declared a journalism minor.
“The Northerner was a big part of helping me discover that,” he said.
In addition to working with The Northerner, Crawford serves as a residential assistant for University Housing and hosts his own weekly radio show, “The Kitchen Sink Radio Hour,” with Norse Code Radio. He also worked as an intern in Kentucky’s House of Representatives during the 2025 legislative session.
Crawford said he was honored to have been selected for the position of editor-in-chief.
“I have a lot of respect and reverence for the publication,” he said. “I am very excited to be able to lead the helm in that way for the upcoming year, and hopefully continue to grow and improve The Northerner in any way I can.”
As far as his goals, he hopes to increase the on-campus presence of the publication, whether that be through hosting events or reporting on as many campus happenings as possible. Crawford hopes that increased presence will encourage others to join The Northerner or be more comfortable to share their stories.
“People know the magazine. They pick it up, they see it on campus, but getting people to know who we are and what we’re about at The Northerner would be something that I’m very keen on doing over the next year,” Crawford said.
