Northern Kentucky University has hired Dr. Brandon Thompson as its vice president of Student Affairs, the university announced Tuesday.
Thompson, who has 15 years of experience in higher education, most recently served as associate dean of student engagement at the University of Kentucky. In that role, he oversaw Fraternity and Sorority Life, Religious and Spiritual Life, Student Organizations and Activities and the Office of Family and Civic Engagement, which he helped establish in January 2025. He has also held student affairs positions at Eastern Kentucky University, Kansas State University, East Carolina University and Eastern Illinois University.
“Brandon’s commitment to student success and holistic support embodies the kind of leadership that is essential during this pivotal time in higher education and at NKU,” NKU Provost Diana McGill said in a statement. “I am confident that his passion for student-centered engagement will be invaluable as we continue to elevate the NKU experience.”
“I am honored to join NKU in building on the incredible work being done to create a student-ready institution, and I look forward to collaborating across the campus to further this mission,” Thompson said. “As we navigate the ever-evolving landscape of higher education, I am committed to providing strong leadership that prioritizes student success and well-being.”
Thompson earned a Doctorate of Education in educational leadership and policy studies from Eastern Kentucky University, as well as a Master of Science in college student affairs and a Bachelor of Arts in communication studies from Eastern Illinois University.
Collin Jarrell, a junior and Student Government Association (SGA) vice president, was a member of the university’s hiring committee. He said Thompson made an impression early in the selection process.
“I’m super excited to have Dr. Thompson join the student affairs team. As a member of the committee, I knew that he stood out from the very beginning. He’s very community-minded, very student-focused, and just passionate about the work that student affairs are doing,” Jarrell said.
Jarrell also said he views Thompson’s familiarity with higher education in Kentucky as an advantage for NKU.
“I also know that he has great experience within the state. So the ever-evolving student affairs and higher education landscape—he is very familiar with how it works in Kentucky, and I think that will be very beneficial to us.”
He added that Thompson’s personality and approachability would help build a better connection between students and NKU administration.
“I think he’s very relatable to students, he’s very personable, and I think he’ll be a great bridge between the students and the administration that student affairs desperately needs.”
The interview committee was formed in September, with virtual interviews conducted in November. Finalists were invited to campus in late January for in-person interviews, which included student forum opportunities.
The vice president of Student Affairs role has been vacant since May 2023, following Dr. Eddie Howard’s departure. Since then, the Office of the Provost has overseen student affairs responsibilities typically managed by the VPSA.
Thompson will assume the VPSA role immediately.
