NKU senators, students announce campaign for SGA President, VP

At the time of reporting, two sets of candidates have announced their intention of running for president and vice president of NKU’s Student Government Association in the upcoming 2021-2022 school year. Each pair, listed below in alphabetical order, has announced their platform and priorities via social media. Students are encouraged to read each candidate’s platform in order to cast an informed vote on March 24 and 25. 

Aliya Cannon & Chris Roat: “Amplifying the Unheard To Be Understood”

Aliya Cannon and Chris Roat are campaigning on a three-point platform based on transparency, student body unity and mental health advocacy. 

Cannon, social work major, was inducted as an SGA senator this semester and serves as president of the National Pan-Hellenic Council. She is also a R.O.C.K.S. mentor. Roat, social studies education major, is the vice president of recruitment for Sigma Phi Epsilon and vice president of member and community development of NKU’s Interfraternity Council.

“We are not running for a position, but for a change,” Cannon and Roat’s campaign announcement read via Twitter. 

Their platform consists of the following:

  • “Creating a space of transparency, accountability, and integrity in our community.
  • Bridging the gap between cultural communities on campus to increase our leverage of a unified body.
  • Advocating for student’s mental health.”

Jackson Coates & Rebecca Noel: “Every Student’s Government”

Jackson Coates and Rebecca Noel have announced a plan focused on service, SGA accessibility, campus sustainability, expansion of resources and restoration of student life.

Jackson Coates, biology major, joined SGA last semester and currently serves as a senator. Coates is also on the Men’s Track and Field team. Noel, anthropology major, serves on the Executive Board of the Honors Student Association as vice president of internal affairs. 

“We believe the effectiveness of NKU and SGA relies on collaboration and open feedback between students and organizations at every level,” according to Coates and Noel’s campaign social media account on Instagram. 

Their platform consists of the following: 

  • “Breaking down SGA doors.
  • Fostering a community of service and empathy.
  • Increasing sustainability on campus.
  • Expanding student resources.
  • Restoring student life after COVID-19.”
