What you missed at SGA Aug. 31

SGA discussed upcoming events, freshman elections and student suggestions for the coronavirus response team at Monday’s meeting. 

No resolutions were passed because SGA did not have enough members to form a quorum, which is the minimum number of members present at a meeting to make the proceedings of that meeting valid. 

Following freshman elections, SGA will have five new members, which will bring the assembly to a quorum for the next meeting. A resolution concerning the current alcohol policy is planned to have its first reading at the next meeting.

Freshman elections will be held on Wednesday and Thursday. Results will be broadcast at 10 p.m. on Thursday via Facebook Live on SGA’s page here. New senate and justice appointments are also expected to occur soon.

Dean of Students Arnie Slaughter encouraged members to reach out to him if there are any issues that they would like to be brought to the attention of NKU’s coronavirus response team. 

According to Slaughter, the team meets three times a week to discuss current circumstances and ways to proceed in the spring semester. During these meetings, Slaughter is able to bring up specific student concerns for the team to address.

“Continue to tell us what your thoughts are (and) what your peers are discussing,” Slaughter said. “As we move towards the winter break, and also prepare for the spring semester, if there are things that you’re experiencing or your peers are experiencing, please let us know as soon as possible.”

For example, Slaughter said he recently spoke to the cabinet about how difficult the transition from in-person to online classes was for some students during the first few weeks of the semester. 

According to Slaughter, once the coronavirus response team becomes aware of an issue, they could respond in several ways. The team could adapt their protocol to solve the issue, communicate the already existing solution more clearly or place the concern on their radar for future consideration.

Members of SGA also announced two events coming up in the next few months. A town hall will be held virtually on Sept. 23, and a Victor Talks about electoral literacy will be hosted on Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. More details about these events will be released soon.

Next Monday falls on Labor Day, so SGA’s next meeting is scheduled for Sept. 14 at 3:30 p.m. in the Student Union, SU 104.
