The Northern Kentucky University Men’s Tennis team extended its winning streak to six matches with two road wins in as many days, defeating St. Joseph’s College (SJC) 9-0 March 20, then Lewis University 5-4 March 21.

No one dropped a set the entire match against the Pumas, making 15 straight sets won by the Norse on day one of competition.

Sophomore Ignacio Ortiz started things off in the first singles flight with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Ishan Gohil. Ortiz and senior Fritz Dlabik also posted an 8-0 win in the first doubles flight over Gohil and Brandon Ward.

In singles, no one won more than four games off the Norse and in doubles, no more than three games.

Senior Jason Kramer closed out the match against SJC with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ben Kalinowski.

Kramer said his consistency was most important in both victories.’

‘My number one goal going into both of the matches this past weekend was to work on hitting the ball deep and be consistent,’ Kramer said.

NKU defeated Lewis 5-4, in a tightly contested match.

No Norse player won a singles match until the third flight when freshman Will Knoll defeated Ben Karas 6-2, 7-6. Freshman Ricardo Weaver joined Knoll and Kramer, with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Balazs Somogyi.’ Kramer also posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Lewis’ Chris Thomas in the sixth singles flight.

Knoll was able to get another win for NKU when he partnered with freshman Tyler Fraser in the third doubles flight, defeating Bret Mega and Scott Mauer 8-4.

The Norse were able to work as a team to get victories over two tough opponents, improving their record to 2-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

‘For both matches, we just went out there and played our best tennis,’ Kramer said.

NKU will travel to St. Louis, March 27 to battle the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
