A Coastal Carolina University sprinter was arrested after police found him with marijuana.
Authorities say 21-year-old Javarius Lavontae Phelps of Greenwood was charged with marijuana possession and intent to distribute. The Web site for the J. Rueben Long Detention Center says he remains in custody there.
The Horry County Police Department says officers stopped a car that was driving left of the center line. They found 3 ounces of what they believed to be marijuana, and seized $355.
Phelps, a junior, was part of the Chanticleers 400-meter and 1,600-meter relay teams, each of which set school records at the Big South Conference meet.
A college spokeswoman said in a release that Phelps was temporarily dismissed Wednesday from the men’s track team. A final decision depends on the outcome of the case.
