It was a record-setting weekend for Northern Kentucky University at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Cross Country meet Oct. 21. Both the men’s and women’s team placed third overall in the competition.
The men placed five runners in the top 25 and totaled 86 points for the competition. The third place finish was the best ever posted by the men’s team. NKU junior Brad Bullock earned All-GLVC honors by finishing in 26:13, which put him in seventh place. Bullock, a local product out of Winton Woods High School in Cincinnati, became the first NKU men’s runner to receive All-GLVC accolades (and the fourth ever) since Brian Flaherty in 1995. Norsemen Matthew Shoulta finished 15th with a time of 26:33, and Keith Knapp placed 17th in 26:35.
The men’s competition was paced by University of Southern Indiana’s score of 63, followed by Lewis with 72.
The third place finish at the GLVC Championships is the highest for the Norse women’s program as well. University of Wisconsin-Parkside won the team title with a score of 39, followed by USI with 53.
Junior Rose Jepkirui led the Lady Norse while setting a school record in the six-kilometer run with a time of 22:01. Jepkirui placed fifth in the individual competition and was also awarded All-GLVC accolades. Norse junior Julianne Hoekzema finished sixth with a time of 22:05 and also earned All-GLVC honors for her second straight year.
Both NKU teams will compete at the NCAA II Regional meet Nov. 4 at Kenosha, Wis.
