The Official Impromptu Northern Kentucky (OINK) film festival is a premiere for high school students to show off their work and hear from professionals in the industry at NKU.
Griffin Hall will open its doors on Saturday at 10 a.m. for several hours of panels, showcases and workshops.
Sara Drabik, an electronic media and broadcasting professor, teaches the film festival class responsible for putting together events like OINK.
“We have an amazing film industry community here, and they support this festival immensely. Not just with their money, but with their time,” Drabik said.
The festival will open with lighting demos hosted by Harris Media Co. At about 10:30 a.m., there will be an “industry” panel featuring five prominent professionals in different areas of the media industry.
For the hours following, there will be rotating panels students can choose from. One session features a stunt professional demonstrating how to safely punch and fight on camera.
Aaron Zlatkin, an audio professor at NKU, will host a Foley workshop, which is a practice of making sound effects that can be paired with film.
Once all of the panels wrap up, screenings will begin for the submissions at 1p.m. There will be a break for the judges to come together and then the awards will begin
Winners will be presented with “pink sparkly pig trophies” through five different categories. There is also an Audience Choice award where the audience will get to submit their votes for their favorite film.
Yousef Naji, a student on the sponsorship team, believes OINK to be a great development opportunity for the next generation.
“I think that is super impactful and makes them realize that one day they could make something that is seen in front of a live audience,” Naji said.
While OINK is targeted for high school students the event is open to all members of the community.
