“‘Anything Goes’ is a timeless tale. It is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, so it has been around long enough and stayed relevant long enough,” says the lead actress, Kristin Kaufman, in NKU’s production of “Anything Goes.”
“Anything Goes” takes stage Wednesday in NKU’s Corbett Theatre. The 1930s theatrical performance consists of long tap numbers and comedy pieces that keep the fast pace exciting.
Reno Sweeney sails along the ocean liner the S.S. American from New York to London and finds herself involved in the historic theme of a love triangle. Through flirting, chaos and blackmail the characters are taken through quite a ride.
The students in the show have roles that have been famously played by Broadway legends. Tony and Oscar award-winning actor Joel Grey has starred as the show’s Moonface Martin.
Tony award-winning actress Sutton Foster has appeared on stage as Reno Sweeney. Foster won the Tony award for the category, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for her performance in “Anything Goes.”
Gangster Moonface Martin will be played by student Cody Combs, who has a unique element to his character.
“What’s equally as fun to me is the role itself, because I don’t have to do anything serious. I just get to be crazy all the time. It’s a blast. I love it,” says Combs.
The iconic musical has challenging dance numbers that take an army of high energy and big smiles on their faces. This challenge has not only fired up the students, but also NKU director Genevieve Perrino.
“It was a lot and an undertaking telling them, ‘hey you are going to do an entire tap number for five and a half minutes. Here we go,’” says Perrino.
The show will be the first show back in the Corbett Theatre. The Corbett Theatre has been under construction for a year and a half, and has had a few setbacks along the way.
The Corbett Theatre’s construction progress has made minor changes to the show dates.
The show was originally supposed to run Nov. 15-23, but is now set to run Nov. 20-23rd.
