Roundnet enthusiasts met on NKU’s Griffin Lawn this weekend for NKU Roundnet’s first official tournament. Students and the general public were welcomed to campus to play what many people know as Spikeball in the Victorfest Spikeball Tournament.
“There’s been some tournaments that are hosted by the Kentucky Roundnet [Association],” said Logan Bittner, president of the campus club. “But we’re hosting one that’s actually at NKU.”
Evan Talley, a freshman and member of NKU’s roundnet club, said the club became official on campus just a few weeks ago.
Over the last year, Spikeball on NKU’s campus has grown and Griffin Lawn has continued to be the spot to play it. Alex Aaron, an NKU alumni who started the formation of the club on campus last year, has been back to help the current club members get their start. Aaron is also a part of the Kentucky Roundnet Association which is the governing body for the club.
“I’m letting these guys take over a lot of it, but I’ll be seeing it over a little,” said Aaron when discussing the tournament earlier this week.
Five nets were set up in a triangular formation across Griffin Lawn with two teams of two at each net. The groups played in 15-minute intervals, with the winning team advancing toward the net at the point of the triangle.
“At the end of the day, you want to have the most wins,” Aaron explained to the group of Spikeball players before the tournament started.
Morgan Brightwell and Kenzie Alkire, freshmen at NKU, said that their resident assistant sent out a list of events happening on campus, so they decided to try Spikeball out.
“We’ve been practicing,” said Alkire.
Talley commutes to campus and said that Spikeball has made him want to be on campus more.
“Between classes, we’ll come out here,” said Talley. “[Aaron] will be out here with the net, we’ll be out here playing, just trying to get people to come out and get involved with the club.”
