Green Bay defense stifles Norse
GREEN BAY, Wisconsin — Holding Northern Kentucky to just 26 percent shooting Saturday, the Green Bay women’s basketball team defeated the Norse 52-40 at the Kress Center.
Green Bay, champions of the Horizon League for the 18th consecutive year, improved to 25-3 overall and 15-1 in the league. NKU falls to 16-11, 8-8.
Northern Kentucky pulled within four, 20-16, late in the first half on a Rebecca Lyttle basket. Green Bay scored the final four points of the half to take a 24-16 lead into the break.
A three by Kasey Uetrecht with 6:38 left in the third pulled the Norse within three, 27-24. Following a Mehryn Kraker basket for Green Bay, Christine Roush knocked down a three and the Norse trailed by just two, 29-27.
NKU scored just 13 more points over the remaining 15:32 of the game. Green Bay closed the third quarter on a 12-3 run to take a 41-30 lead into the fourth.
The Norse cut the deficit to nine early in the fourth, but got no closer.
Christine Roush led NKU with 14 points. Uetrecht added 12 points and 5 rebounds.
Kraker was one of three Phoenix in double figures in scoring with 16 points. Jessica Lindstrom had a double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.
The Norse return home looking to improve its seeding for the upcoming Horizon League tournament. NKU closes the regular season with two home games this week. They host Youngstown State 7 p.m. Thursday and Cleveland State 7 p.m. Saturday.
