Winning basket waived off as Norse lose in Detroit
DETROIT — The NKU women’s basketball team added another heartbreaking finish Saturday to a season filled with agonizing losses.
After Detroit took the lead with 10 seconds remaining, Rebecca Lyttle’s apparent game-winning tip-in was waved off on review as the Norse fell 66-65.
Lyttle’s attempt concluded a thrilling game-ending sequence.
Courtney Roush went end-to-end and scored with 17.2 seconds remaining to give NKU a 65-63 lead.
Detroit’s Nicole Urbanick answered at the other end with a three with 10 seconds remaining, giving the Titans a 66-65 lead.
The Norse (10-6 overall, 2-3 in Horizon League) had a couple chances to win. The final chance came off of an inbounds pass with 0.2 seconds remaining.
NCAA rules state any shot attempt with 0.3 seconds or less on the clock must be a tip-in. Lyttle attempt at a tip went in as the buzzer sounded.
However, upon review, the officials determined Lyttle actually caught the ball rather than tipping it in. Since officials said Lyttle caught the ball, the shot was waived off.
Rianna Gayheart led a balanced NKU attack with 11 points and 5 assists. Kasey Uetrecht and Christine Roush added 9 points each.
Rosanna Reynolds led Detroit (8-9, 4-2) with 18 points and 8 rebounds. Urbanick added 14 points.
NKU returns home 7 p.m. Thursday to face Green Bay at BB&T Arena. Green Bay has won or shared every Horizon League regular season basketball title since 1999.
